in 1966, at independence, botswana was the second poorest country in the world. perhaps that is why it was not fought over by the colonial powers. since independence, the discovery of diamonds changed the economics of the country. the government actually used diamond revenues to invest in health and education. every citizen has health care coverage, private insurances compete with the national service.
tomorrow, june 25, a major rally will be held in washington dc, by the national physician’s alliance (a group that emerged out of a student organization so that physicians for whom patient advocacy was a core value, could have a voice). the us struggles to provide health coverage to all. the american medical association has once again shown its venal nature by opposing any national health plan as an option on the table.

Poignant lesson. If Botswana can do it, it means that Americans die because of lack of health care because people don’t care enough. Money can’t be the issue.

Canada’s medicare system originated in the province of Saskatchewan (1960s or 70s?)… at the time it was introduced by the government it was also strongly opposed by the medical establishment… it is worth fighting for, towards a fairer more inclusive society … good luck!!!

Great image! And it would indeed be a great day in America if the politicians could quit playing money-grab and get to work on real solutions - not the gift to the insurance companies and slap in the face to folks who can’t afford insurance that is floating around DC right now…

I don´t know how much P89.00 converts to $$, but after having dealt with medical community closely over the period of two years, I came to the realization that there is no coverage cheaper than the coverage for preventive medicine. US by far has the poorest school lunches I have ever seen, the highest contents of sugar and sodium in food products which translates directly into adult diseases in early childhood. One can’t wonder who else will exult with a sick country other than the pharmaceutical industry??!! Sorry for venting, Anjan!
